Strawberry Picking
Yesterday, we spent the day celebrating my birthday! I awoke to my favorite breakfast prepared by my husband, eggs and potatoes! Yum! We then took a beautiful drive to a strawberry farm in Rome, GA where we spent the morning picking 15 lbs. of strawberries! On the way home, we stopped off along the side of the road and found this amazing waterfall creek. It was simply beautiful. I enjoyed being "still and know that He is God!" We spent about 2 hours just exploring and observing God's creation.

Raising Butterflies

About a month ago, Gideon and I were sitting outside on an early spring morning and chatting about the different seasons. He was enthralled with how things were changing: weather warming, flowers blooming, the rollie-pollies, and somehow we got on the subject of butterflies. He asked "What do baby butterflies look like?" This question spurred us to purchase a butterfly
tree house and order baby butterflies which we learned were called larvae. We found several
children's books and informational books on butterflies from our local thrift store, used book store, and eBay. Gideon and Layla wanted to read these books everyday while we waited for our butterfly larvae to arrive and then finally they did! Gideon spent the next few weeks being a Daddy to caterpillars. Being sure they had enough sunlight, food, and being careful not to shake there home. While visiting Nana's house one day he found some different looking caterpillars in the backyard. He wanted to know what type of butterflies they would turn into, so we looked them up and found out that they wouldn't turn into butterflies, but that they would turn into moths! How neat! We kept two of them and sure enough they shortly began to change; however, our caterpillars created hard, brown coverings called chrysalis and the moth caterpillars made a soft, white, cotton-threaded like covering called a cocoon. They looked totally different, but there function was the same. Eleven days later we experienced the birth of four little Painted-Lady butterflies and one Eastern Moth! For whatever reason, one chrysalis and one cocoon did not hatch. We talked about what could have affected them to not survive and we also talked about death being apart of all parts of life living on this Earth. GIdeon now has a ton of request on what we will raise next: frogs, scorpians (yikes), baby chicks,....lol Click on the butterfly picture to view the video!
